The Ashokan Center

Come reconnect with nature, history, and the arts!

The Civil War Days Weekend was obviously fun and interesting for the public. It has great potential to be an annual event. The Ashokan Center buildings, farm, and grounds are an excellent authentic-feeling environment for encampments. This adds to the "living History" experience; the portrayal of the everyday life, drills, equipage, and camp activities of the 19th century soldier or civilian.

True, for a first-time-ever event the troop turnout was minimal, and there were glitches and errors, but being a "Living History" performer/re-enactor in the camp last weekend, I can say, as a Union Sergeant, that the venue will accommodate many more troops for more realistic skirmish scenarios, and more impressive camps. Get the word out to the buffs, and "if you hold it, they will come".

I too was present as a reenactor and I may add that the whole place lent to the beauty of the event. And most of all my complements to the entire staff at Ashoken your kindness was simply the best. I wish I didnt have to leave.
I look foward to more of these events where i can come back to see you all again.
